"A tradition unlike any other -- the FLOG in Canaan Valley"

"Wayne O'Shell Memorial Plaque" annual award

Wayne O'Shell was a remarkable man.  Everyone who knew him, loved him.  He was a great friend of many of the FLOG players.  Wayne was a business man from Morgantown, a widower, and he loved golf.  Wayne and Terry Fleming joined Don and Dennis for FLOG 2 in 2007, and Wayne played several years after that when his health allowed him.  Many of us remember when Wayne had to play golf while connected to an oxygen supply. He never complained about his lot in life or his circumstances.  Instead, he was always grateful for his friends and family, and brought joy into the lives of those who loved him.

Wayne never wanted to miss the FLOG.  He would start preparing for the FLOG early in the spring, sometimes going to Healthworks to build up his stamina.  More than the golf, he appreciated and loved being with the men and enjoyed the fellowship from like-minded brethren.  Wayne loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and wanted to tell everyone about how Jesus came into his life, and saved him from his sins, and he wanted everyone to know the joy of the Lord, like he did.  Because of what Jesus did for him, he gave so much of himself to others.  Often he would underwrite the expenses of bringing high school students from southern WV all the way to Morgantown to attend a Mountaineer football or basketball game.  Prior to the game, the students would gather together with other high school students at a church or gymnasium to listen to a former WVU athlete share his or her testimony of coming to Christ and becomng a follower of the Lord.  This was so important to him, and he loved doing it time after time.

Several weeks after FLOG 5 in 2010, the Lord called Wayne to heaven.  His passing left a big hole in the FLOG.  In 2011, we decided that one way to remember Wayne was to establish the "Wayne O'Shell Memorial Plaque" and award the plaque each year to a golfer who, in the opinion of the selection committee, exhibits a character trait that was also exhibited in Wayne's life.  Here is the record of past winners of this award.

At FLOG 15, a deserving golfer will be awarded the "Wayne O'Shell Memorial Plaque" and he will take the plaque home with him, giving him the opportunity to hang the plaque in his office or man-cave for the year, reminding him of the fun and joy of being recognized in this special way at FLOG 15.
